"ConcertMasters" Series is a new series of orchestrations designed to bring to school and community orchestra a broad and comprehensive selection of works, the majority of which are from the standard orchestral repertoire. A number of these works have been edited and abridged to conform to the requirements of the series. The basic orchestration is as follows: 2,2,2,2 - 2,2,3,0, timpani, percussion and strings. Clarinets and trumpets are in B-flat; the number of horns can vary from 2 to 4, depending on the work; additional parts (3rd flute, piccolo, bass clarinet, and tuba) also sometimes appear. Parts originally written for English horn, contrabassoon, harp or other less frequently used instruments have been reassigned. Extreme ranges and registers have been avoided and some complex or exposed lines have sometimes been simplified and/or doubled. Substantive parts in oboe 2, bassoon 2, and horns 3 & 4 have been cross-cued. Some works are transposed from their original keys.
