When Pete Dorwart approached me about writing a new book for Naughty Marietta, I was immediately interested. My
mother introduced me to operetta and musicals before I could speak and Naughty Marietta was a popular
favorite where ruthless pirates, betrayal, and true love tales are told through the glorious music of Victor
Herbert. What's not to love?

Working with Pete, I streamlined the plot, eliminating the various subplots, making the story more appropriate
for today's audiences. I also highlighted without romanticizing the plight of the casquette maids - adventurous
women who dared to travel to an unfamiliar country to start a new life. They recognized their power and used it
to their best advantage. We decided to preserve the lyrics of Rida Johnson Young with very minor edits.

It has been a privilege to work with Pete to create a fun and campy version of Naughty Marietta, Revised 2018,
that will be enjoyed by a new generation of music lovers. Spoiler: In the end, Marietta finds her true love in
Captain Dick, who completes her song.
