Twelve Select Overtures (arr. Hummel). A-R EDITIONS, INC.
|
|

N00035 / pf, fl, vn, vc
*** The score is the piano part.
During the period 1820-30, the noted pianist, composer, and teacher Johann Nepomuk Hummel was commissioned by the English entrepreneur J. R. Schultz to make arrangements of symphonies, concertos, and twenty-four opera overtures. All are scored for an ensemble of piano, flute, violin, and cello. Twelve Select Overtures, the first of two sets of twelve overture arrangements, appeared in London in the early 1820s. The practice of arranging large-scale works for small ensembles was very popular during the early nineteenth century. Playing transcriptions was an ideal way to learn the newest compositions and a favorite mode of home entertainment (and, at times, of romantic courtship). The vast majority of the public experienced orchestral music through the medium of chamber music, in the privacy of their living rooms. Many composers were asked to make such arrangements, but their efforts met with limited success. Hummel, however, was ideally suited to the task. A student of Mozart and a friend and colleague of Beethoven, Weber, and others, he had also conducted many of these operas in his capacity of kapellmeister in Weimar. Hummel's arrangements of these twelve overtures are masterful examples of the genre and are also a joy to play. The set includes some of the best-known and most popular overtures by Mozart, Beethoven, Weber, and Rossini, as well as examples by composers who are less well known. They open a window on the world of early-nineteenth-century opera and also provide valuable information about the performance practices of the period.

GERSHWIN, George (1898-1937) - Rhapsody in Blue (Arr. Iain Farrington). ARIA EDITIONS

AE99999 / chbr orch: 1, 1, 1, 1, sax - 1, 1, 1, 0, timp, perc, str, solo pf, (minimum strings 2,2,2,2,1)
Arranged for piano solo and chamber orchestra
George Gershwin (1898-1937) composed his Rhapsody in Blue in a matter of weeks, before its premiere in 1924. It was commissioned by the bandleader Paul Whiteman for his own ensemble, and was premiered at New York's Aeolian Hall in a concert intended to showcase a new style of symphonic jazz. Whiteman's ensemble consisted of 23 players, mostly wind and brass with violins, percussion and banjo. In 1926, with high demand for the piece, the piece was re-scored for a standard symphonic orchestra, incorporating full sections of strings, woodwind and brass. This new chamber orchestra version uses a similar number of players as the original band version, restoring the smaller scale of Whiteman's band, but with the full range of orchestral colour familiar from the orchestral version and from Gershwin's own works.
Instrumentation: Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Alto Saxophone, Bassoon, Horn, Trumpet, Trombone, Percussion (Timpani, Crash Cymbal, Suspended Cymbal, Bass Drum, Snare Drum, Glockenspiel, Triangle), Piano solo, Violin I, Violin II, Viola, Violoncello, Double Bass?. Strings must be a minimum of 2.2.2.2.1.

Final version 1911
Of all his symphonies, Mahler gave the Fourth, his favorite and problem child, his most particular attention. "The Heavenly Life," a humoresque composed in 1892 for soprano and piano, which he already wanted to use in the final movement of the Third Symphony under the title "What the Child Tells Me," ultimately became the nucleus and final movement of the Fourth. Even after publication in 1901, Mahler kept repeatedly refining the orchestration. His maxim "not without my retouching" led to a whole series of revised reprints. It is probably no coincidence that Mahler performed especially the Fourth Symphony in his last two New York concerts in February 1911, using this opportunity to review once again the score and parts. This performance material with his "retouching" served as the main source for the new edition. Furthermore, included for the first time were corrections and annotations in conjunction with performances of the Fourth, which Mahler entered into the scores of conductors such as Mengelberg and Wickenhauser.
